Anecdote and Comment Area

The only reason I put this photograph online is that it's an excellent example of the relatively small dynamic range of film as compared to that of the human eye. The dynamic range of the human eye is roughly about 11 f-stops; of film, only about two f-stops. If you exposes for the sunlit wood paneling of the house, you end up with no detail in the shadows (which, properly exposed, are more than two f-stops darker). This is why cloudless days can be some of the worst times to take pictures. Wait for a day with high overcast clouds to get appealing pictures of your house.  -- Kevin
